ABU DHABI, 29th April, 2023 (WAM) — AI research will play a key role in capitalizing on global opportunities and creating practical, tangible solutions to increase AI adoption and generate economic and social value, said Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE. Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and President-elect of COP28 visited the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI).

Dr. Al Jaber, who is also Chairman of MBZUAI, said: “Adoption of AI across industries will help achieve the country’s goals of advancing technology and diversifying the economy. Forecasts show that AI solutions are expected to contribute around $13 trillion to global GDP by 2030 dollars, optimizing the industry of the future, and dramatically improving the lives of billions of people in the process. We stand on the brink of a technological revolution, and MBZUAI is providing a world-leading pipeline of AI experts, as well as an ecosystem of nurturing industry collaborations to support The UAE’s innovation trajectory.”

During the visit, G42 CEO Xiao Peng and MBZUAI President and University Professor Eric Xing met with leading researchers from MBZUAI and the Inception Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IIAI) to discuss key research projects that will be delivered to the UAE National priorities including sustainable environment and infrastructure; world-class healthcare and education systems; exploring large language models, especially for Arabic.

The chair also met with MBZUAI faculty, focusing on the institution’s three core pillars of climate, health and education, where he reviewed research on energy-efficient language models and machine learning systems, maximizing solar output, and real-time autonomous malaria diagnosis and assessment Dr. Al Jaber also watched a demonstration of the eco-friendly chatbot Vicuna, a global collaboration between researchers from MBZUAI, UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford and UC San Diego.

Peng Xiao commented: “The UAE’s strong commitment to advancing AI and digital transformation is evident in a thriving academic institution like MBZUAI. In its three years of existence, MBZUAI has attracted world-renowned researchers from the most prestigious educational institutions across the globe. This concentration of talent has spawned a massive wave of growth in the local AI ecosystem and helped the UAE build a strong AI development platform, creating an environment conducive to driving meaningful and sustained innovation, with far-reaching implications for industries across the globe Influence. “

Dr Al Jaber also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in climate-based solutions, saying: “Artificial intelligence will contribute to the UAE’s Net Zero strategic initiative by 2050 and help drive climate progress. Technologies developed today It is possible to increase energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and ensure that economic growth and climate progress go hand in hand, while advances in technologies such as artificial intelligence, analytics, and robotics will allow us to better decarbonize high-emitting sectors, measure and reduce energy consumption and emission.”

It is estimated that AI, if applied globally, could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 5.3 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent gas (CO2e), playing an important role in limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

During his visit, Dr Al Jaber was also updated on a joint MBZUAI and IBM project to provide a data engine to identify overheated urban areas in Abu Dhabi, which could be used to inform climate and sustainable development policies. With its ability to analyze vast amounts of global data, AI can be used to measure greenhouse gas emissions and climate trends and uncover potentially important patterns that will prove invaluable to scientists and policymakers.

Professor Eric Xing said: “As we demonstrate today, MBZUAI is already leading global efforts to develop and deploy sustainable AI solutions and applications. Harnessing the power of AI, we are delivering state-of-the-art research that can Solve the world’s most pressing problems, such as healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability. The need for trained AI professionals and investment in AI research and development has never been greater. By pushing the boundaries of AI and continuing to work with Key industry leaders collaborate to realize “the application of artificial intelligence solutions where we can have profound social and economic impact. Amid the recent hype surrounding artificial intelligence, we must continue to focus on its enormous potential for good. “

MBZUAI is one of 12 UAE universities and higher education institutions participating in the University Climate Network (UCN). The task force catalyzes collaboration to advance ambitious climate action, nationally and internationally, to accelerate positive change for a low-carbon, resilient world. Eight MBZUAI students from eight countries were also selected to participate in the Climate Ambassador Program (CAP). They recently participated in an immersive role-playing simulation at the COP28 UAE conference, where they had the opportunity to research, explore and learn about the various challenges countries face due to climate change.
