HONOLULU, May 2 (AP) — Police shot and killed a man after receiving reports of violations of a temporary restraining order on the small Hawaiian island of Molokai.

Two officers were on the phone Sunday morning when they came across a man with a weapon, the Maui Police Department said, according to Maui News.

The unidentified man approached them and one of the officers deployed his Taser, but it had no effect and the officers opened fire, the newspaper reported.

Residents of Molokai, part of Maui County known for its small-town vibe without traffic lights, were shocked by the deadly shooting.

Keani Rawlins-Fernandez, who serves on the county council for Molokai, said nothing like it happened in recent memory.

Maui police did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press asking when was the last shooting involving officers in Molokai.

“Most of us are like relatives or friends. We mostly know each other,” Rollins-Fernandez said of the island’s population of about 7,500 people. Most of the officers are longtime Molokai residents, she said.

While many questions remain about what happened, people wonder how it could have been avoided. “What other services do we need on this island to prevent something like this from happening?” she said.

She said she attended high school with the man, who police say is 40, from Kaunakakai.

“It’s an absolute tragedy,” she said. (AP)
