Emirates News Agency – UAE, Japan discuss strengthening comprehensive strategic partnership

ABU DHABI, 4th May, 2023 (WAM) — Senior officials from the United Arab Emirates and Japan met in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, 3rd May, 2023, to participate in the UAE Foreign Ministry’s Subcommittee on Politics, Diplomacy and International Cooperation. First meeting Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) and Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting is part of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI), launched last year.

The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Lana Zaki Al Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, and Kansuke Oka, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director-General for Middle East and African Affairs. Japan Bureau.

“The relationship between the UAE and Japan is historic and strategic,” said His Excellency Ambassador Ranazaki. “Today’s meeting provides an excellent opportunity to take stock of our strong bilateral relationship and discuss how to achieve the shared ambition of our leaders to substantially enhance this strategic partnership in the context of CSPI.”

Officials from both sides used the first subcommittee meeting to explore opportunities to strengthen ties through cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, energy technology, food security, and enhanced research and development cooperation.

Shihab Al Faheem, UAE Ambassador to Japan, added: “Alignment of interests and shared desire to seize opportunities in various sectors continues to be the driving force behind the growth of our ambitious partnership beyond the traditional energy and trade sectors.”

Participants in the consultations discussed regional developments and the UAE’s upcoming presidency of the UN Security Council. They also discussed key issues including Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, the fight against extremism, and their shared commitment to non-proliferation.

The UAE and Japan also reaffirmed their joint commitment to address climate-related challenges ahead of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held in the UAE this November, as well as the G7 summit in Japan.
