Almost 17 months after the finale of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton said “the scar is there and the memory will live on forever”.
Hamilton lost the drivers’ title to Max Verstappen in controversial circumstances that day when FIA race director Michael Massey made an unprecedented call to allow only leader Hamilton and second-placed Wes The cars between Tapan unraveled by themselves.
That meant time for a lap in which Hamilton went from race leader to second, while Verstappen pounced at Turn 4 to claim the title and world title.
“It’s been rigged, man,” shouted Hamilton over the radio, watching his dreams of a record-breaking eighth world title die with Red Bull.
It’s a lingering injury, like losing a “first love,” he said.
“Eventually that feeling never really leaves you,” he told ESPN“It’s like when you think about your first love, it’s always the first love and the first heartbreak.
“Abu Dhabi, the scars are there and that memory will live on forever. Even though I reframed my thoughts, I think it still took me a whole year to actually finish it because we went straight back to work .
“It’s not a quick thing.”

His team boss Toto Wolff was also affected by the loss and put the blame squarely on Marcy’s shoulders.
Desperate for “no Mitch, no” at the time, Wolff didn’t believe there was a conspiracy to prevent Hamilton from scoring eight points. Instead, he said it was all up to “one person”.
“It was a series of catastrophic circumstances for us, but it was the making of one man – there was no big conspiracy theory behind it,” the Austrian said.
“Would I want to get Todd involved instead of filming for his documentary? Yes. At least tell the stewards to put it in perspective.
“But would it have made a difference? I don’t know. It’s a one-man achievement, it’s a championship between two drivers and two teams, both sides have won, and the result was different that day because one man Just lost the plot.
“But I’m at peace now.”
Looking back at Abu Dhabi today, Hamilton said he found positives as he turned it into an “enhanced” experience.
“It strengthened everyone on our team, but from my personal experience, it was a very powerful experience,” he said.
“You can’t win all the time, and going through that and learning how to be a better teammate, how to be really inspiring and bring people together in a different way was a valuable lesson for me and I’m really thankful for that.
“So that’s why I went into this season knowing that it prepared us better for what we faced going forward.”
