Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police warned motorists to avoid tailgating and maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead to avoid serious accidents.
Authorities released a video clip to demonstrate the dangers of tailgating. Video shows a dark sedan following a silver sedan in the leftmost lane of the road. The vehicle then collided with the silver sedan, and the force of the impact caused both vehicles to slide across three lanes to the median. The vehicle hit the middle rail, causing other vehicles to slow down to avoid the wreckage.
to punish
Police released the video as part of its “Your Comment” program, which regularly releases footage of actual accidents to deter reckless driving.
In Abu Dhabi, rear-end collisions result in a Dh400 fine and four traffic black points. Vehicles will also be impounded and motorists must pay a release fee of Dh5,000 within three months of the violation.
Abu Dhabi Law No. 5 of 2020 provides detailed penalties for vehicle impoundment.
serious accident
Abu Dhabi police have previously said the harsh penalties were imposed because tailgating is one of the main causes of serious traffic accidents in the emirate.
Motorists often engage in this practice to steer the vehicle ahead out of the way. Some motorists engage in other reckless behavior while tailgating that could be considered harassment, such as repeatedly honking the horn or flashing the high beams in a distracting manner.
