[ad_1]

The United Arab Emirates will submit its UPR report to the United Nations on May 8, 2023. During this review, the UAE will explain its efforts to strengthen respect for human rights and fulfill its international obligations.

According to a coalition of 53 human rights NGOs, the UAE ranks first among countries in the Middle East for its leadership and commitment to human rights values and principles.

A coalition of NGOs submitted a report on the UAE to the United Nations as part of an international event dedicated to examining human rights developments in the UAE. More than 11 international experts spoke, and more than 100 experts, researchers and scholars participated. They all recalled the UAE’s achievements in promoting civil, political and economic rights over the past 50 years.

Participants noted the UAE’s work in advancing civil liberties, such as freedom of opinion and expression, strengthening the justice system, protecting prisoners and detainees, and enhancing community protection through the establishment of counseling, rehabilitation and rehabilitation centres. The emirate’s record on collective rights and the development of national institutions related to the protection and promotion of human rights were also discussed.

During the seminar, the UAE’s record on these issues was praised, especially in the areas of women’s rights, children’s rights and the rights of vulnerable groups. The experts also highlighted the UAE’s achievements in protecting workers’ rights, combating human trafficking, combating extremism and terrorism, and promoting a discourse of tolerance and coexistence. These principles are reflected in the UAE’s Human Fraternity Document and the establishment of the Abrahamic Family House.

A coalition of NGOs organized an international seminar in Geneva during the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council. It discusses the challenges of further promoting human rights in the UAE. Eight international experts in the field of human rights took the floor to review many aspects of the issue. Also noted the UAE’s efforts to combat climate change, including its global efforts to achieve zero emissions and carbon neutrality.

The symposium further highlighted the UAE’s achievements in the field of sustainable development and its participation in the implementation of the United Nations’ global sustainable development plan. The UAE has been praised for strengthening the rights and freedoms in the UAE and for upgrading the institutional system that protects these rights.

All of this was submitted in writing to the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council.

The coalition of NGOs also submitted two statements to the council, praising the UAE’s efforts and leadership in promoting women’s rights. The statements recognize Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, chairperson of the UAE Supreme Council for Women, and her country’s efforts to empower women, place them in regional and global leadership positions, and advance their struggle for justice and equality.

The NGO coalition issued a statement at the end of its presentation to the Council, commending the efforts of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed to achieve peace and promote tolerance, coexistence and human brotherhood. In particular, bin Zayed was praised for establishing the Abraham Family House.

The presentations underscore the importance of promoting new regional and international practices so that the region and the world can benefit from the UAE’s pioneering work in the areas of protection of human and collective rights, improvement of quality of life, and realization of justice and equality for all without discrimination effort.
