Nothing draws people into theaters like the promise of a chapter ending, especially when tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. this weekend, ” Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3director James Gunn bid farewell to this spatially misfit iteration and the creative voice it drives, taking in $114 million from 4,450 North American locations, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Internationally, the film opened in 52 territories, including China, and “Vol. 3” grossed $168 million, with a worldwide debut of $282 million.

Domestically, that’s a solid amount of money for any film, and slightly below what we’d expect from a Marvel premiere. On the same weekend last year, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” took in $187.4 million in its first three days in North America, building on the success of “Spider-Man: Nowhere to Return.” In November, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” also grossed more than $181.3 million.

But things are back to earth this year, at least by Goofy’s superhero standards. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Fever” opened to just over $106 million at the box office, taking it to $474 million worldwide. At rival DC/Warner Bros., “Shazam! Wrath of Gods” grossed just $133.4 million. This weekend, the question some analysts were asking was whether that was because specific characters or the larger “superhero” fatigue” issue.

“The Guardians Vol. 3 “Bump” super mario bros movie ’ broke out after topping the charts for four consecutive weekends, starting the summer movie seasonan important and often lucrative corridor in Hollywood that runs through Labor Day, typically accounts for 40 percent of a year’s box office.

For Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, it’s still a solid start to the summer, which he said is on track for the strongest profits since 2019.

“While ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. 3’s debut may reflect a bit of audience fatigue with the credible superhero genre, it’s just the beginning of what promises to be an irresistible film market with something for every taste and every audience. A compelling portfolio of films for the group,” Dergarabedian said.

The next superhero movie in the works is DC’s “The Flash,” due out on June 16, thanks to star Ezra Miller Legal and Personal Issues.

“The Guardians Vol. 3” Sees Cast Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley The return of Cooper and Vin Diesel. Reviews were mostly positive, but more divided than in previous installments. And it’s still hard to compare pre-pandemic openers like Vol. 2 debuted with $146 million (May 2017) and a post-pandemic premiere.

“Vol. 3” was Gunn’s last Guardians/Marvel film, as he turned his attention to leading DC Studios.

“Super Mario Bros. The Movie” added $18.6 million in its fifth weekend to take second place, bringing its domestic total to $518.1 million. Globally, it’s now over $1.1 billion.

“Ghost Rises” came in third with $5.7 million, followed by “Is God There?” in fourth. It’s me, Margaret,” worth $3.4 million — both are reserved.

Studios left most of their space open for superhero behemoths over the weekend, but Screen Gems and Sony did debut their new Priyanka Chopra Jonas rom-com “Love Again” (featuring Celine Dee at 2,703 locations). Weng and some new songs). It earned a measly $2.4 million, placing it in fifth place.

U.S. and Canadian theater ticket sales are expected Friday through Sunday, according to Comscore. Final domestic data will be released on Monday.
