UAE’s Al Jaber urges phase-out of methane emissions by 2030

[ad_1]

ABU DHABI, May 10 (Reuters) – The United Arab Emirates’ COP28 chair-designate Sultan al-Jaber said on Wednesday that the oil and gas industry should gradually reduce methane emissions by 2030 and that investment in technology is needed to develop carbon alternatives.

Jaber speaks at the inaugural UAE Climate Technology Conference in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE will host a climate summit in December.

Jaber also renewed his call to triple renewable energy capacity to 11,000 GW by 2030 and then double it again by 2040, but added that renewables were not the only answer to climate change.

“If we’re serious about curbing industrial emissions, we need to be serious about carbon capture technologies,” Jaber told more than 1,000 attendees from technology companies, major industries, finance and government.

Jaber is also the head of national oil giant ADNOC, and since his appointment this year he has advocated for a more inclusive approach to climate action that leaves no one behind, including the fossil fuel industry.

His presidency at COP28 involved setting the conference agenda and intergovernmental negotiations.

“For almost five months, my team and I have been actively involved in listening tours as part of our preparations for COP28, where I have heard many voices from the global south, major economies, civil society and business voice,” he said.

“What’s missing is a holistic, unified ecosystem that brings together all the key players”.
