Middle East ‘tourist arrivals close to 100% recovery’

At the Global Airport Leaders Forum (GALF) in Dubai, delegates heard that the Middle East leads the world in passenger traffic at 93% of pre-2019 levels, with Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia soon to achieve 100% recovery.

Passenger traffic in the Middle East will fully recover in 2024, growing by 4.2% per year to 2040.

Speaking at GALF, which was held in conjunction with the 22nd Dubai Airports Show, Kashif Khalid, regional director for the Middle East and Africa at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said the recovery of the aviation industry is on track and is off to a good start until 2023.

In his keynote speech, Omar Bin Ghaleb, Deputy Director-General of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), said: “Our vision is to create a world-class aviation ecosystem that embraces cutting-edge technology, fosters innovation, fosters Customers deliver service experience. To achieve this vision, we have invested heavily in modernizing our infrastructure, upgrading our regulatory framework and improving our operational capabilities.”

“Our industry is not without challenges from security threats, technological disruptions, environmental concerns and changing customer expectations. We must quickly navigate our changing environment. We recognize the importance of aviation in the development of our nation and we will Remain committed to placing our airport and airline at the forefront of global best practice,” he added.

“We have adopted digital transformation advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics and blockchain to improve efficiency, enhance safety and personalize passenger services.

“Sustainability is at the heart of our approach and we are aware of the impact aviation has on the environment and there is an urgent need to mitigate it through our airport and airline strategic partnerships and collaborations and environmentally friendly practices. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint , and be responsible stewards of the environment,” he added.

Ibrahim Ahli, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Air Navigation Services (dans), said: “In recent years, as the post-pandemic challenges have increased, our approach has also changed. Dubai has overcome these challenges and in the shortest time to become the aviation and tourism center.”
