Parts of Sittwe, the capital of Myanmar’s Rakhine state, were flooded as gusts of up to 130 mph knocked off tin roofs and destroyed a communications tower.

Myanmar’s rescue service said two people had died in the landslide, while local media reported that a man in Myanmar died when a tree fell on top of him, Al Jazeera reported.

The biggest storm to hit the Bay of Bengal in more than a decade swept through the seaside town, turning the streets of Sittwe into rivers.

It said the storm also tore off the roof of the Coco Islands Stadium, about 425 kilometers (264 miles) southwest of Yangon, the country’s largest city.

More than 4,000 of Sittwe’s 300,000 residents have been evacuated to other cities, with more than 20,000 sheltering in fortified structures such as monasteries, pagodas and School. Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, India’s Meteorological Department reported that “Extra Cyclone ‘Mocha’ has weakened to a Severe Cyclone over Myanmar.”



It added that the system was continuing its weakening trend and would become a cyclonic storm in the next few hours.

Additionally, Mocha has been spared the densely populated cluster of refugee camps in low-lying neighboring Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, where authorities moved about 300,000 people to safer areas before the storm hit, the Daily Star reported that the Rohingya population in a densely populated refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar in the southeast of the country Refugees huddled in crumbling houses.
