Abu Dhabi Police have activated a new road alert system on highways in the UAE capital. The radar-like devices have been installed along highways to alert drivers to traffic accidents or weather conditions. Police said the purpose of this was to increase road safety.

Different colors will flash on the system to alert drivers to traffic accidents or weather conditions.

The flash alert is solar and battery powered. They are visible at a distance of up to 200 meters, day and night.

Here’s what the colors mean:

  • Red and Blue: Alerts the driver to a traffic accident ahead.
  • Yellow: As a warning of adverse weather conditions such as fog, dust or rain.

Many residents posted on social media that they had found the devices, with some calling it a “good idea” while others applauded the police move.

The Smart Alert System is the latest in a series of road safety measures introduced by Abu Dhabi Police:

  • The force recently fined slow drivers Dh400 for using the so-called “fast lane”. On Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road, the maximum speed limit is 140 km/h and motorists are traveling at speeds exceeding 120 km/h in the leftmost two lanes. Slower vehicles are allowed to use the third lane, where no minimum speed is specified.
  • In the UAE capital, the weather is monitored by a smart system that automatically reduces the speed limit on roads and highways in case of bad weather or fog. In poor visibility (visibility below 200 metres), the speed limit will be reduced to 80 km/h. The revised speed is displayed on the electronic information board – overhead and provisional.

  • In January 2021, Abu Dhabi Police deployed a new automated system to detect drivers wearing seat belts and mobile phone violations. The system, called Vehicle Attention and Safety Tracker (VAST), uses a network of radars to capture high-resolution images from AI-powered cameras. Motorists will then receive a text message detailing the violation.
  • Abu Dhabi Police is using smart vehicles to test new drivers applying for a driving license. Powered by artificial intelligence and the latest technology, the vehicle monitors and evaluates the driver’s performance during the test, generating an automatic report and recording it directly in the applicant’s file.
  • Unlimited speed ‘buffer’: A ‘speed limit’ of 20 km/h applies in all emirates except Abu Dhabi. The radar on the road is set to a speed 20 km/h higher than the prescribed speed limit. Abu Dhabi eliminated the speed buffer system in 2018. The speed limit imposed by the emirate is the actual speed limit.
