Emirates News Agency – Etihad Airways cuts carbon emissions by 26% per RTK

ABU DHABI, 18th May, 2023 (WAM) — Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, has detailed the company’s commitment to sustainable development and its progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in its annual sustainability report. progress.

Compared to a 2019 baseline, the airline achieved an impressive 26% reduction in CO2 emissions per revenue tonne-kilometer (RTK) to 482 grams in 2022.

Etihad’s sustainability strategy is based on the principles of achieving emission reductions through measures within the sector, aligning with industry voluntary roadmaps and frameworks, engaging with the UAE industrial ecosystem, being transparent and proactive on sustainability issues, And continuously formulate the target strategic roadmap.

Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Aviation Group, said: “Going forward, we remain steadfast in our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and ensuring the sustainability of our operations. Our sustainability strategy is built on partnership integrity, transparency and innovation, we will continue to work with our partners, industry peers and government agencies to drive positive change and lead the aviation industry towards a greener future.”

Sustainability highlights for Etihad Airways also included the signing of the Neste Airline Partnership to facilitate collaboration between corporate organizations wishing to use SAF credits to offset their Scope 3 emissions.

Etihad Airways, in partnership with ITOCHU Corporation and Neste MY Sustainable Fuel, became the first foreign airline in Japan to receive the supply of SAF. The flight, which will operate in the fourth quarter of 2022, is the first delivery of approximately 50,000USG of Neste-produced fuel, saving approximately 75 tons of CO2 at a blend ratio of 39.66%.

The airline signed a memorandum of understanding with World Energy for a long-term strategic partnership to decarbonise flights through sector-wide emissions reductions.

Etihad Airways, in partnership with World Energy, operated the first net-zero flight powered entirely by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Book & Claim, offsetting 216 tonnes of CO2 emissions through SAF credits.

Etihad Airways also planted 68,916 mangroves as part of the Etihad Mangrove Project.
