PORT MORESBY, May 22 (PTI) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Fiji’s highest honor by Prime Minister Sitivini Rabuka on Monday for his global leadership, which is a big deal for non-Fijians. It is a rare honor.

Modi arrived in Papua New Guinea on Sunday, his first visit to the country, to host a key summit between India and 14 Pacific island nations to boost bilateral ties.

“A great honor for India. Prime Minister Modi was conferred by the Prime Minister of Fiji Fiji’s highest honor: Companion of the Order of Fiji, for his global leadership. To date only a handful of non-Fijians have received this honour,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Prime Minister Modi dedicates this honor to the people of India and generations of the Fiji-Indian community who have played a key role in the special and enduring bond between the two countries, the foreign ministry said on Twitter.
