Russia accuses US of encouraging Ukraine attacks | World News

Russia’s envoy to the United States said on Wednesday that Washington was encouraging Kiev by openly ignoring Tuesday’s drone strikes that hit several areas of Moscow after President Vladimir Putin blamed Ukraine for the attacks.

The White House said it did not support the attack on Russian soil and was still gathering information about the incident, which Putin said was an attempt to intimidate and provoke Moscow.

“What are they trying to hide behind the phrase ‘gathering information’?” Ambassador Anatoly Antonov said in remarks published on the Telegram messaging channel.

“It’s an encouragement to terrorists in Ukraine.”

On Tuesday, Putin labeled the attack, which has brought Ukraine’s 15-month-long war to Russia’s heartland, an act of terrorism. Ukraine has also accused Russia of terrorism in its bombing of Ukrainian civilians, allegations Moscow has denied.

A Ukrainian presidential aide denied that Kiev was directly involved in the drone attack on Moscow, but said Ukraine was watching the events and predicted more to come.

The attack on Moscow, which wounded two people, came after Russia launched three air strikes on Kiev in one day and 17 airstrikes so far in May, killing two people this month and sowing the seeds of destruction and fear.

Russia has long accused the so-called “Western collective” of waging a proxy war against Moscow by providing military and financial aid to Ukraine.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 destroyed cities, forced millions from their homes and claimed thousands of lives.

Moscow called the war a “special military operation” aimed at “denazifying” Ukraine and protecting Russian-speaking people. Kiev and its allies have called it an unprovoked land grab.
