Officials said the attack was part of a “radical campaign” against President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to fight the oligarchs.
A car carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s main assistant was shot, and a senior official described it as an assassination attempt.
According to a police statement, more than 10 bullets hit a car in an incident near the village of Lesnyky, about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the capital Kiev, on Wednesday.
The driver of the vehicle was injured in the incident.
The police statement stated that a criminal case involving a deliberate murder has been filed.
A senior lawmaker representing the Zelensky People’s Public Servant Party stated that assistant Shersh Shefel was not injured. Sheffield, 57, is one of the officials closest to the president, leading a group of advisers.
“I had a brief conversation with him, everything is fine, he is still alive and fine,” the Russian Xinhua News Agency quoted David Alakamiya as saying.
Zelensky promised to fight the country’s oligarchs and corruption after taking office, and is currently participating in the United Nations General Assembly in the United States.
His office stated that Zelensky has been informed and will comment soon.
Zelenskyy adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said the shooting may have been motivated by the president’s attempts to deal with oligarchs.
Ukraine’s Interfax news agency quoted Podoljak as saying: “Of course, we have linked this attack with aggressive and even radical movements that oppose the active policies of the head of state.”
Podolyak told Reuters that “the use of automatic weapons to conduct an open, deliberate and extremely violent attack cannot be different from an attempt to kill a key team member”.
He said Zelensky would not be intimidated by this incident.
“We emphasize that the president’s policies aimed at fundamentally changing the country will remain unchanged,” Podolac said.
This week, the Ukrainian Parliament will debate a presidential law aimed at reducing the influence of oligarchs.
This is a story of development. Stay tuned for more details.
