The UAE has launched a new campaign to highlight success stories in sustainable development. This is to get more people to contribute to the country’s efforts on climate action.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chair of the High Committee overseeing preparations for the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28 UAE) bin Zayed Al Nahyan launched the National Sustainable Development Campaign to raise awareness of sustainable development initiatives and projects in the country.
The move aims to encourage local community members to engage and support strategies related to climate action. The UAE hopes more people will join the initiative, which will have a positive impact and create an environmentally conscious community.
In October 2021, the UAE announced its ambitious move to try to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, making the country the first Middle East and North African (MENA) country to do so. The UAE has pledged to invest $50 billion over the next 10 years to scale up climate action.
welcome to move
Meanwhile, Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, welcomed the campaign, saying the move underscores the UAE’s commitment to inspiring local and community efforts.
According to her, this will promote positive behavior. “The National Sustainability Movement will play an important role in raising awareness among society and different partners of the UAE’s efforts on local climate action,” she said.
She also added that the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment will coordinate with different partners, including federal and local government entities and private sector companies, to achieve the goals. “Our aim is to showcase the UAE’s efforts, projects and initiatives that underline the country’s commitment to meet its climate obligations and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050,” she said.
The UAE 2050 Net Zero Emissions Strategy Initiative aligns with the Paris Agreement, which calls for countries to develop long-term strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and limit the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels .
Activity
The event website sustainableuae.ae highlights national initiatives and success stories in sustainable development. It builds on the progress the UAE has made over the decades, starting with the approach and legacy of its Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the field of sustainable development.
The UAE is now taking collective action to achieve a sustainable future through a number of initiatives and achievements across a wide range of areas, from achieving net-zero emissions to conservation efforts on land and sea.
