United Nations, June 6 (AP) In an election reflecting opposition to Russia’s war on Ukraine, EU member Slovenia beat Moscow’s close ally Belarus in a landslide on Tuesday for a seat on the United Nations Security Council that begins in January.

The race between the two members of the U.N.’s Eastern European bloc, the only election contesting five seats in the U.N.’s most powerful body, is closely watched because of their opposition to Russia’s Feb. 24, 2022, invasion of Ukraine.

Slovenia got 153 votes and Belarus got only 38 votes in the secret ballot election of the 193 member states.

The other four Council members serving two-year terms are Guyana with 191 votes, Sierra Leone with 188 votes, Algeria with 184 votes and South Korea with 180 votes.

Five new council members will start their terms on January 1, replacing five countries – Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates – whose two-year terms end on December 31.

The council’s 10 non-permanent seats are allocated to regional groups, which usually choose candidates but have sometimes been unable to agree on an uncontested list. (Associated Press)
