BEL-AIR (United States), June 7 (AP) — A man accused of helping leaders plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor pleaded guilty Wednesday, the most since agents sabotaged antigovernment insurgents in 2020.

Sean Fix said he provided material support for an act of terrorism, the tactic used to rob Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at his Antrim County vacation home. Prosecutors agreed to drop the weapons charges.

Prosecutors said they had evidence that Fix was trained by the Wolverine Watch militia group to deal with “politically motivated violence” and hosted a five-hour session at his Belleville home. meeting, where there was a lot of discussion about kidnapping Whitmer.

Fix, 40, helped plot leader Adam Fox pinpoint the location of Whitmer’s adopted home, key information in a 2020 property hunt in northern Michigan, prosecutors said in a court filing.

Fix appeared at Antrim County Court as one of five people charged during that part of the inquest. A co-defendant pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in March, and three other men are due to go on trial in August.

The main kidnapping plot went to federal court and four men were convicted, including ringleader Fox and Barrycroft Jr. The other two were acquitted.

Separately, three men were convicted at a trial in Jackson County, a site of militia training, and are serving lengthy sentences.

Investigators say Whitmer, a Democrat, became part of a broader effort by antigovernment extremists to wage a civil war around the 2020 presidential election. Her COVID-19 policies, which closed schools and restricted the economy, were deeply scorned.

But the informant and undercover FBI agent remained inside the group for months, leading to an October 2020 arrest. Whitmer was not physically injured.

After the plot was thwarted, Whitmer accused then-President Donald Trump, saying he had “comforted those who sow fear, hatred and division.” Last August, 19 months after leaving office, Trump called the kidnapping plan a “sham deal.” (Associated Press)
