ISLAMABAD – Pakistan said on Thursday that it sees the United Arab Emirates’ presidency of COP-28 as an opportunity to achieve meaningful progress and effective global action in key areas to mitigate and reverse the negative impacts of climate change.

Responding to media inquiries regarding the UAE’s nomination of Sultan Ahmad al-Jaber to chair this year’s UN Climate Change Conference COP-28, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that over the years, the UAE has shown a strong commitment to Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

“Through initiatives such as the Masdar City project, the Abu Dhabi Clean Energy Strategy, the UAE’s net-zero emissions by 2050, and clean fossil fuels, the UAE has invested heavily to lead global efforts to achieve the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement agreement on goals and indicators,” she added.

The UAE has also demonstrated its commitment to combating climate change by implementing several sustainable initiatives to mitigate the effects of climate change, Balocv said.

For example, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, one of the world’s largest renewable energy projects, has contributed to reducing carbon emissions, she said.

“The UAE is also investing in sustainable agriculture, water conservation and waste management, demonstrating an integrated approach to addressing all aspects of the climate crisis,” she elaborated. She said the UAE’s strategic location also enables it to play a key role in the fight against climate change, serving as a bridge between the global North and the global South, promoting international cooperation, knowledge sharing and innovation to find common solutions.

She said Pakistan believed that the UAE’s presidency of COP-28 would offer great potential for global progress in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

The spokesperson said: “With its commitment to renewable energy, strategic position, sustainability-driven initiatives, technological advancements, international cooperation and knowledge sharing, the UAE can play an important role in driving positive change and inspiring a sustainable future for all .”

“Pakistan also has every confidence that, under the leadership of Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber as Chairman of COP-28, we will be able to decisively move the global climate change agenda in a positive direction in December 2023 development,” she insisted.
