Astronomer’s Last Glance
Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s The Astronomer (1668) travels from the Louvre to the Louvre Abu Dhabi in 2021 and will return to Paris this summer. On display until Sunday, the artwork depicts a photograph of a seated figure holding a celestial globe carefully placed on a table, in intricate detail that reveals Vermeer’s virtuosity. Astronomers are on display in the cosmology room of the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s 3rd wing, alongside other navigational instruments, including a celestial and terrestrial globe designed by Jodocus Hondius and borrowed from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
“Gypsies Go to Heaven” Music, Dance
The Cultural Foundation, which is part of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, kicked off its summer program on Saturday (8pm) with ‘Gypsies Going to Heaven’. The show, a new music and dance extravaganza from director and choreographer Jan Durovcik, is a unique combination of two world-renowned ensembles, the Slovak Dance Theater and the Gypsy Devils. Filled with breath-taking dance and a solo performance by Ernest Sarkozi, this riveting show showcases the spontaneous culture of the wandering gypsies. Educational exhibition under the guidance of experts
On Sunday, the Abu Dhabi chapter of the Kerala Muslim Cultural Center (KMCC) will host a day-long educational fair. ET Mohammed Basheer, Visiting Member of the Indian Parliament will inaugurate the ‘Edu Festive’ expo at Baniyas International Indian School (10am-5pm). Career experts and academicians from UN programmes, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Abu Dhabi University will be present. Shukoorali Kallungal, president of KMCC Abu Dhabi, noted that students and parents will meet representatives from different educational institutions to learn about scholarships and higher education opportunities, as well as new horizons in education. Hudayriyat Island Night Ride
The inaugural Night Ride is part of the ‘After Sunset’ series of iconic sporting events taking place on Saturday (5:30pm – 10pm) on Khuderiyat Island. Cyclists will be able to enjoy the first-ever reverse ride on the closed Hudayriyat cycle path. The community event will be divided into three races based on gender and age: Men’s, Women’s and Juniors. “Formula Run” at Ferrari World
To coincide with Ferrari’s long-awaited return to the 91st edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi on Yas Island will host a sold-out ‘Formula Car’ on Sunday. Divided into 2.5km, 5km and 10km races, competitors will travel through the theme park, venture into Yas Mall and return to the finish line via the charming Italian Village. In addition, children under the age of eight can take part in the Ferrari 499m Invitational Race. Check-in is at 6.15am and games will start at 7am.
Fascinating “Arirang Narsha” exhibition
Nation Towers Mall partnered with the UAE Korean Cultural Center to present a photography exhibition titled “Arirang Narsha”, where community members can discover the timeless beauty of Korean art. Created and presented by Korean artist and photographer Yang Jae-moon, each exhibit captures the fluid movements of traditional Korean dances through long exposures, giving each image a hazy, dreamlike quality. It showcases Jae-moon’s extraordinary ability to highlight the charm of Korean traditional dance through his lens. His photographs capture the long trajectories of dancers’ movements, emphasizing the elegance and mystery of this art form. The exhibition runs until June 16.
