Turkey: Explosion at rocket and explosives factory kills five | World News

Five workers were killed in an explosion at a Turkish rocket and explosives factory, the Turkish Defense Ministry said.

The incident took place at the factory compound of the state-owned Machinery and Chemical Industries Corporation in the Elmadag district east of the capital Ankara.

The cause of the explosion was unclear, but Ankara Governor Vasip Sahin said it was likely caused by a chemical reaction during the production of explosives.

Mr Sahin told reporters that no more workers were trapped, awaiting rescue or taken to hospital.

The investigation is ongoing and several ambulances and firefighters were dispatched to the plant.

Families of those who worked at the compound also gathered there to find out more.

According to the Turkish NTV news channel, the explosion was so powerful that it shattered windows of nearby shops and houses.

The factory produces missiles for the Turkish Armed Forces and the Turkish Interior Ministry.
