kabul [Afghanistan]June 14 (ANI): An Austrian man who visited Afghanistan earlier this year is currently detained in the country, Khaama Press quoted the Austrian foreign ministry as saying.

The government confirmed in an email response on the matter that the individual traveled to Afghanistan in May and was detained there. Austria has long advised against visiting Afghanistan, which was mentioned in the email.

Details of the man’s identity and other information were not released due to data protection concerns. However, it did announce that it had been “actively pursuing a resolution” since learning of the arrest and was in regular contact with the man’s family.

The man was a veteran far-right extremist in his 80s and co-founder of the National Organization for Democracy, a small far-right group that was outlawed in 1988, according to the Austrian daily Der Standard, cited by Khaama Press. .

He has reportedly been arrested weeks after a far-right magazine published an article titled “Holiday with the Taliban” in which he described life in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan positively. He has reportedly been detained for espionage, and Austrian neo-Nazis have made his case public through a Telegram channel.

Khaama Press cited a Der Standard report saying the Austrian, named Herbert F, had a history of traveling to dangerous places, including Afghanistan in the 1980s and Kurdish fighters fighting ISIS in northern Syria a few years ago.

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 after the overthrow of the previous government and the withdrawal of Western soldiers.

Since then, the de facto authorities have not been recognized as the legitimate government of the country, and their recognition by the international community is conditional on several factors, including respect for human and women’s rights, cutting ties to terrorist channels, stopping drug trafficking, and forming a Inclusive government in the country, reports Khaama Press.
