ABU DHABI, 15th June, 2023 (WAM) — His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President, has sent a letter to Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, including He was invited to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana meeting of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) to be held in Dubai Expo City in November.
President Irfan Ali received the invitation when he met Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation.
During the meeting, President Irfan Ali highlighted cooperation opportunities in various fields and the government’s ambitious development plans.
He expressed Guyana’s commitment to transform its growing economy by exploring new models of economic development.
Al Hashemy led a high-level UAE delegation from various entities and ministries to Guyana with the aim of strengthening ties and promoting cooperation between the two countries.
The UAE delegation was welcomed by President Ilfaan Ali, Vice-President Dr. Bharat Jagdeo, and senior ministers and officials from the Guyana Cabinet. During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen the relationship and promote trade and investment, especially in renewable energy, agriculture, tourism and healthcare. The meeting highlighted that Guyana is an attractive investment destination given its strategic geographic location, rich natural resources and business environment. Additionally, Guyanese officials applauded the UAE for its timely and generous commitment to provide medical supplies and vaccines for COVID-19.
Discussions also focused on Guyana’s important role in the upcoming climate conference, the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), to be hosted by the UAE this November. Recognizing Guyana’s rich forest resources and its commitment to protecting biodiversity, the two sides discussed appropriate platforms within COP28 to advance this agenda.
During his visit, Al Hashemy visited the Arthur Chung Conference Center to address students from various secondary schools, emphasizing the UAE’s belief in the vital role of youth and education in ensuring a prosperous future. Al Hashemy encourages Guyanese students to use education as a catalyst for empowerment, innovation and social development.
Following the recent school fires in the country, the UAE has announced a donation of AED 1.84 million to support the development of a specialized school for people of determination in Guyana. The pledge, aimed at promoting inclusive education and empowering people with disabilities, demonstrates the UAE’s sense of responsibility towards the most vulnerable in our society.
Additionally, a UAE business delegation held meetings with Guyanese counterparts from the private sector. During these meetings, the two sides discussed ways for the two countries to further cooperate to increase trade in areas of cooperation explored by the two countries in the areas of climate, food security, and trade and investment.
