QUITO (Ecuador), June 17 (AP) — A 76-year-old woman died after spending seven days in intensive care, her family said on Saturday.

The woman’s son, Gilberto Barbera Montoya, told The Associated Press that doctors who took her to the state hospital after the incident said she died Friday night.

Ecuador’s health ministry confirmed in a statement that Bella Montoya died of an ischemic stroke after a week in intensive care. It added that Montoya had been under “permanent surveillance,” but gave no further information on the medical investigation into the case.

Barbera Montoya said he had not yet received any reports from authorities of a medical explanation for what happened, and warned that things “will not go on like this”.

He added that one of the deceased’s sisters had formally complained about the incident and was trying to find out the identity of the doctor who initially pronounced her dead.

Bella Montoya woke up on June 9 after spending five hours in a coffin at a funeral home in Babahoyo, about 208 kilometers (about 129 miles) southwest of Quito, according to reports. Come and start knocking on doors.

The body of Montoya, a retired nurse, is returned to the same funeral home where she woke up. She will be buried in a public cemetery, her son told The Associated Press.

The country’s health ministry said last week it had formed a technical committee to review how hospitals issue death certificates. (Associated Press)
