Two Filipinos on death row in UAE pardoned

Malacañang announced Friday, June 23 that the emir’s government has pardoned two Filipinos sentenced to death for drug convictions and another serving a 15-year sentence in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

President Ferdinand “Bonbon” Marcos Jr. on Friday thanked UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for granting humanitarian amnesty to three Filipinos.

The decision was previously conveyed by the UAE Ambassador to the Philippines, Mohamed Obaid Salem Alqatam Alzaabi, to the Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Benhur Abalos on Tuesday night.

On April 27, Marcos sent two separate letters to Abu Dhabi asking for a humanitarian pardon for three convicted Filipinos — two initially sentenced to death for drug trafficking and one sentenced to 15 years for defamation. years in prison.

In January, Gulf News reported that two Filipinos had been sentenced to death by the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court for possession and dealing of narcotics and psychotropic substances. It is unclear whether the two recently convicted Filipinos have been pardoned.

At the same time, Al Nahyan once again invited Marcos to attend the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai in December. He also cited the contribution of some 600,000 Filipinos working in the UAE.
