Electrician John, who was staying at the Azulean Hotel where the tragedy happened, is understood to have played for Carlisle City’s Sunday Premier League side Scotby FC.
The club said in a tweet late yesterday: “Today we lost a legend, a player of great talent but an even better man.
“Never forgotten but always loved. RIP Big John.”
Initial reports said the man fell from the fifth floor of a San Antonio hotel, but sources said the man was on the balcony of a room on the third floor and was understood to be staying with a friend when he fell. .
The investigation, led by the National Guard and coordinated by a local investigating judge, is ongoing.
Friends who were traveling with John are understood to have been questioned by police, but there is no indication that the tourist’s death was anything suspicious.
There has not been any update on the circumstances leading up to his death.

The incident hotel is an economical three-star hotel near the San Antonio bus station, which belongs to the Azuline hotel group.

Last September, a 24-year-old British woman fell to her death from a balcony at the Cala de Bou Rosamar hotel, a short drive from San Antonio.
She was named Robin Eve Maines, from Wallasey, Merseyside, shortly after the tragedy.
In tribute to her then-daughter, mum Clare Maines said: “Our beautiful 24-year-old daughter tragically passed away after falling 30ft from a balcony. We have nothing to say. Our hearts are truly broken .”
Robin-Eve’s brother Cam Mains went on to say: “For those of you who don’t know today, I lost my older sister Robin-Eve Mains from Ibiza Falling 30 feet from a hotel balcony. She will be loved and remembered forever.” “Because she was an amazing person. Our heart aches for the loss of someone so special. I will always love you sister.”
