Employees in the UAE can supplement their income by earning up to AED 10,000 per month through part-time jobs.
Most part-time jobs in the UAE offer competitive hourly wages, but earnings largely depend on the skills of the employee, the industry or the urgency of the employer to recruit candidates, recruitment experts say.
Additionally, part-time roles can help employers easily manage short-term projects and seasonal demands with a temporary, flexible workforce.
Under UAE law, an employee can work for more than one employer after obtaining a license from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.
Diamond Fares, founder and managing director of On Point Portal, said the earning potential of part-time jobs in the UAE can vary depending on factors such as industry, experience, job duties and duration.
“The average hourly salary varies from Dh75 to Dh150, but it depends on hours worked, job description, experience of part-timers, etc,” Fares said.
With over 9,000 users, On Point Portal has posted 1,400 free-time jobs for waiters, waitresses, models, event workers, and brand ambassadors for anything in hospitality and entertainment.
Mayank Patel, vice president of sales for Eastern Europe and the Middle East and country head for the Middle East at Adecco, a global human resources solutions company, said earnings through part-time jobs or apprenticeships may vary depending on the qualifications and skills of the candidate, the industry or the employer’s ability to complete the program. “Ideally, a part-time job can earn anywhere from Dh4,000 to Dh10,000, depending on the role and complexity of the job,” Patel said.
How many working hours?
In terms of working hours, she added that part-time working hours may vary based on personal preferences and job requirements in the hospitality and entertainment industry.
“On average, individuals work a number of hours during a part-time job, ranging from four to seven hours per day, allowing for flexibility and work-life balance. Earnings may vary based on factors such as hourly rates, job responsibilities, and hours worked different,” she added.
However, UAE law does not stipulate minimum working hours for part-time employment contract employees.
The ideal part-time job is between six and 20 hours a week, Patel added.
Common part-time roles
According to Adecco’s country head, there are various part-time job opportunities in the UAE, depending on the candidate’s interests, skills and experience.
“We can look at retail sales associates, customer service representatives, content creators, food delivery drivers, social media managers, digital marketing specialists, event coordinators, brand ambassadors or promoters, administrative assistants, web developers, graphic designers, IT Positions such as consultant, network administrator, sales assistant – these are just some of the options available. However, there may be many more roles depending on the industry and skills required in the area,” adds Patel.
Diamond Fares noted that before Covid-19, part-time work was limited to specific events. But the hospitality industry has undergone a marked shift in the wake of the pandemic, with many businesses embracing part-time work.
“This is particularly evident in the seasonal nature of the UAE F&B industry, with businesses partnering with professionals during peak seasons to increase staff numbers. Furthermore, towards the end of 2022 and into 2023, we see similar trends in the retail sector, especially in During events and sales,” she added.
