Now in its eleventh year, organizers have confirmed that the popular Tapton Lock Festival is returning this September with a new slew of activities and entertainment for families to enjoy.
Free annual event hosted by Junction art and Derbyshire Council, aim to bring family and friends together to enjoy the outdoors and promote better health and wellbeing. On weekends, the Chesterfield Canal is filled with outdoor theatre, music and dance, arts and crafts workshops, stalls, “try it out” canoes, boat tours and more.
Family favorites such as the talented Bubbler, circus tricks and climbing wall return, but there will also be some new entertainment in 2023, including performances by Bollywood dancers, African drummers and Babbling Vagabonds magical market stalls and seminars!
Visitors can also try out Lego prints and green wood crafts, or experience gardening at the Seed Workshop.
Junction Arts Coordinator Jane Wells said: “Tapton Rock brings together the arts and the outdoors to create an inclusive event for all. It encourages the community to come together in Together, enjoy the beautiful canal walks on our doorstep. In partnership with Derbyshire Country Service, each year we aim to bring back popular events while introducing something new…this year we are delighted to have new performers and events, Bring more color and vibrancy to the festival.
“At Junction Arts, our aim is to build stronger communities through the arts, and the Tapton Lock Festival is a great example! People are healthier and happier as they spend more time in nature with family and friends.”
Junction Arts will also be doing community outreach with Brimington Primary School in July as part of the festival. Students will enjoy a canal tour with a village ranger to learn about the flora and fauna on the canal. In September, they will also collaborate with a local artist to create an artwork that will be exhibited at this year’s festival and complete their Art Prize Discovery.
To further engage the community, Junction Arts will also commission an ‘artist in residence’ at Chesterfield FC to work with a small group of young people participating in Thr1ve, a social prescription group for young people, which is Part of the club Spireites Trust.
The Tapton Lock Festival is a free event held on the 9th near the Tapton Lock Visitor Centerthe th and 10the th September 11:00am to 4:00pm daily.
