Padilla submitted Senate Resolution 665, expressing the Senate’s appreciation for the pardon granted by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and acknowledging the efforts of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“Through the President’s tireless efforts to establish strong diplomatic relations with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, significant achievements have been made in ensuring the welfare of at least 600,000 Filipino foreign workers overseas in the UAE,” he said.

“The Philippines remains committed to further strengthening the bilateral relationship between the Philippines and the UAE in all areas of mutual interest, including cooperation in protecting and promoting the well-being of Filipinos in the country,” he added.

In two separate letters on April 27 last year, President Marcos called on the UAE leader to pardon convicted Filipino prisoners.

On June 23, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed pardoned three OFWs for humanitarian reasons.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Coco” Pimentel 3 also applauded Marcos and the UAE president for their decision to pardon the three Filipinos.

Pimentel said the “act of compassion and kindness” extended to the three Filipinos, two of whom face the dire consequences of death row, “is a testament to the true friendship and cooperation between the Philippines and the UAE.”

He praised the two leaders for their “joint efforts to secure pardons for convicted Filipinos.”

“I congratulate President Marcos and thank the UAE government for this good news. I am sure this significant development will further strengthen the ties between our country and the UAE,” said the former Senate President.

“President Marcos has shown his determination and unwavering dedication to help our cababayas and ensure justice for convicted Filipinos overseas,” Pimentel said.

Pimentel added: “The strong diplomatic relations and effective communications of the Marcos administration have made this cause a great success. His efforts have brought great comfort to the families of the convicted Filipinos.”

Pimentel also thanked the UAE Ambassador to the Philippines, Mohammad Obaid Salem Al Qatam Al Dhabi, for conveying the great news.

“The ambassador’s role in facilitating communication between the two countries has been crucial in ensuring the success of this humanitarian effort,” Pimentel said.
