The Iranian government has detained 11 fishermen from India who went deep sea fishing from Ajman, United Arab Emirates, last week and allegedly entered Iranian waters.

Among them, seven fishermen are from Kerala, five of them are from Anchuthengu, Thiruvananthapuram district, and two are from Parawal, Coron district.

The fishermen’s families have been asking the government to come forward and provide the fishermen’s details.

“My father was the driver of the boat and the others worked under him. They set off from Ajman on June 18. He later told me that they were in Iran because they went in the wrong direction and had been held in In prison.” “My father cried and he told us that they were attacking him. Since then, we have not been able to contact him,” said the family of a detained fisherman.

Church Father Justin said people were concerned about the situation and thanked the Ministry of Social Affairs for visiting the fishermen’s families.

“It’s very unfortunate for the fishermen. 85% of them work in areas near the Iranian border. It has been like this for the past 35 years, but nothing like this has ever happened. I got in touch with MoS Muraleedharan and he responded immediately . I applaud that. Also, he has taken action to come here and meet with these people. That is credible to him,” he said. (Arnie)
