Abu Dhabi’s Shaun Torrente takes pole in dramatic fashion at tomorrow’s French Grand Prix, beating the F1H2O world with a spectacular final lap in qualifying penalties Championship leader Jonas Andersson.

Three-time world champion Torrent capped off a fine day of action, taking the advantage from the Swede in tomorrow’s third round of the season as he looks to repeat last year’s win in Macon.

2021 world champion Anderson’s main rival, Anderson, looked to have earned the advantage for himself when he overtook the American after a propeller change to steal the best time.

But in the closing seconds, defending world champion Torrent once again showed the grit and determination that took him to the top, helping Abu Dhabi 1 to their best result of the day.

He said before arriving in France that he wanted to leave France with the lead at the top of the standings, and his determination will be even stronger when he starts tomorrow just six points behind Anderson.

“All in all I feel like it’s my third pole in a row and the first I’ve actually kept,” said Torrent, who lost in Indonesia and China. “I’m glad we can do normal things and come in and test a week early.

“I finally found a lap at the end and we did, so we’re really happy. The pole position is amazing. Tomorrow we’ll start from first and see what we can do.”

Sharjah’s Ferdinand Zandbergen leads Italian Alberto Comparato, Frenchman Peter Morin and American in six-boat qualifying Brent Dillard, third.

Torrente, who beat team-mate Thani Al Qemzi in Macon last year to claim the F1H2O Drivers’ Championship and captured his fifth consecutive constructors’ title for the Abu Dhabi team, made his intentions clear from the start today.

With H2O Racing returning to two free practice sessions and qualifying, Torrent easily set Moline’s fastest lap in the first group practice session.

China’s CTIC team’s Dillard won Group B ahead of Anderson, Al Qemzi and Victory’s Eric Stark in heavy rain on the Saone.

Victory’s Ahmad Al Fahim was shown a yellow flag during the first round of group qualifying when his boat did a 360 turn in a dramatic incident, Because the wind after the earlier rain made it difficult.

Maureen then set the fastest with Torrente before Comparato grabbed the third penalty in the final seconds to send Sharjah’s two-time world champion Sami Sami Selio turned it down.

There was also a yellow flag in the second group qualifier, with Australian Brock Cohen suspended for a mechanical issue, before Anderson had the best time of the qualifier ahead of Dillard and Zanderbergen. Abu Dhabi veteran Al Qemzi was sixth and missed the penalty shootout.
