After decades in the shadow of the twins, Team Emirates driver Adam Yates fought back on Saturday, beating brother Simon for a stage win in Bilbao, And took the overall lead in the Tour de France.

The twins, from the same small town in the Manchester area, Bury, rose to fame in England and Manchester United as football’s Neville brothers Gary and Phil.
Back in 2013, the Yates brothers finished first and second in the Tour de l’Avenir (a youth Tour de France), with Simon winning.

The relationship between the two is very close. They started their careers with the Orica team, which has grown into Jayco. Simon, who won the Vuelta in 2018, stayed on while Adam moved to Ineos in 2021 and then to the UAE team as a replacement for Tadej Pogacar.
“We get along really well and see each other almost every day. He lives just five minutes from us,” Adam said on Saturday.
“I saw him this morning and he asked me what my plans were but obviously I couldn’t tell him,” the younger sibling said.
“I’m sure he’s going to give me a headache somewhere along the way,” he said with a smile.
Simon Yates said that was his plan.
“I have a really good relationship with my brother. I’m really happy for him,” he said after the game, calming down. “I’ll stick it on him in a few days.”
The victory came after the chaos that ensued after the race reached the summit of the final hillside on the outskirts of Bilbao.
Adam led his teammate Pogacar up the climb, followed by champion Jonas Vingegaard.
But when the Yates brothers broke up, no one seemed interested in getting involved in the brotherly struggle.

Pogacar raised his arms as he followed them across the finish line in third.
“I can’t tell you how much this means to me,” said the Slovenian UAE team leader.
“It’s nice to see this team evolve, and getting a win like this for the team is almost better than winning for myself,” he said, sounding like genuine joy.
It must have meant a lot to their mother too.
“I haven’t spoken to my parents yet,” Adam said after the game. “They were somewhere on the coast in a camper van.”
Long considered the more talented of the pair, Simon has previously won two stages in the Tour de France and Saturday’s result was Adam’s first Tour de France stage win .
Simon also won the Tour de France white jersey as best young rider in 2017, before winning the Vuelta the following season.
Saturday’s stage win was Adam’s first at the Tour de France, but he was given the default yellow jersey in 2020 after Julian Alaphilippe took a time penalty.
He then defended the yellow card in four more stages.

“Sometimes you get injured or sick and you always need backup,” Yates said ahead of Saturday’s opening game in remote Bilbao.
Pogacar, 24, was injured during the Liege-Bastogne-Liege match on April 24. He quickly started training in the gym, but missed more than a month of training on the bike as his wrist had time to heal.
