Abbas gives Israel “one year” to leave the Palestinian territories

[ad_1]

In a speech at the UN General Assembly, the leader of the Palestinian Authority accused Israel of “apartheid” and “ethnic cleansing” and threatened to withdraw recognition of the country unless it withdrew from the Palestinian territories.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas gave Israel a year to withdraw from the occupied territories and threatened that if it fails to do so, Israel will withdraw its recognition of Israel.

In virtual address United Nations General Assembly (United Nations General Assembly) On Friday, Abbas stated that if Israel refuses to withdraw from the territory where the Palestinians hope to establish a future state, he will no longer recognize Israel based on the pre-1967 borders-this is three years of peace. The cornerstone of failure.

“We must declare that Israel, the occupying power, has a year to withdraw from the Palestinian territories it occupied in 1967, including East Jerusalem,” Abbas said.

“If this is not achieved, why continue to recognize Israel based on the 1967 borders?”

The Palestinian leader also called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to “convene an international peace conference” and expressed his willingness to “work throughout the year” to resolve the final status of Israel and the Palestinian state in accordance with UN resolutions. “.

In the context of a map of the region showing Israel’s territorial expansion over the decades, Abbas accused Israel of “apartheid” and “ethnic cleansing,” using terms that are rarely used in the ongoing negotiations for a two-state solution.

He added that the Palestinians are prepared to file a lawsuit in the International Court of Justice “on the issue of the legality of occupying Palestinian land.”

Israel ignored the demands of the Palestinian leadership. Gilad Erdan, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, stated that “people who truly support peace and negotiations will not threaten delusional ultimatums from the United Nations platform as he did in his speech.”

Erdan said that Abbas’ speech “proved once again that he is no longer important.”

The peace process to achieve a two-state solution has been Stalemate for many years.

The Palestinians stated that Israel’s proposal could not give them complete national status or resolve other core issues, including the fate of Palestine refugees and the status of Jerusalem.

Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza in the 1967 war did not end its illegal occupation of the occupied territories. The Palestinians hope that these territories will become their future country.

Palestine recognizes that Israel has always been the basis of the 1993 Oslo Agreement, which is a milestone in the pursuit of peace between the two parties.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett opposed the establishment of a Palestinian state next to Israel. The international community generally believes that this is the only way to resolve the conflict.

Abbas has been facing strong opposition at home. Palestinians — frustrated by his long and increasingly authoritarian rule and security cooperation with Israel — have been holding protests. The death of the outspoken critic During the Palestinian Authority’s custody.
