Abu Dhabi 2022 U23 Men – Bentley World Champions! – Elite News

[ad_1]

At the Men’s U23 World Championships, Connor Bentley Won the double for England as he matched Ketwah’s earlier victory Both world champions are sure to return to Great Britain with big victories in dazzling fashion for the men’s U23s.

Swimming – Riddle leads the way

For man Jamie Riddle wearing #1, swimming is where the South African can do some serious damage to some of his title contenders. Riddle is a very talented swimmer who finished second at the African Championships earlier this year, leading out of the water on the first lap along with Alessio Crociani (Italy) and Mitsuho Mochizuki (Japan).

Behind the leading trio it was tightly packed, with more than half the field on the first lap. After re-entering the water, gaps began to emerge as Crociani tried to stretch the field and was somewhat successful as he reduced the main group in T1 to around 20 athletes.

Reilly and Bentley were in the lead, followed by British teammate Dan Dixon as he came out of the chase pack. Dixon was one of the most popular names pre-event and will have to ride hard in the chase pack if he wants to get himself back into contention.

Bicycles – yet to be played

On the road, pre-race favorite Riddle took the lead and Bentley joined him in a two-man break at the start of the bike. The pair managed to run around the field for about 10 seconds but were caught within two laps as the main group managed to find some cohesion.

Once the initial break was seized, the team ahead slowed down while Riddle picked up the pace impatiently at the front, but no one was in a hurry to move on the road, causing the Chase Pack to bridge the home team after 30km of riding.

With such a technical element, the 38-man home team was nerve-wracking at times, but most made it through unscathed as it really came down to a 10km foot race to determine who would be crowned champion.

Run – Bentley timed it to perfection

Outside of T2, Riddle’s failure to leave on the bike unfortunately came back to haunt him as the slow transition from South Africa left him behind. Bentley and Reilly took the first step and the duo started the race intensely, finishing hard on the first lap, opening up the gap.

Max Stapley (ITU), Maxime Fluri (SUI), Eric Diener (GER) and Kiss rose to the leading duo on lap two. New Zealand’s Saxon Morgan led by 5km before Bentley and Reilly took another substantial step to open up the field, with only Diener and Kiss willing to match them.

Heading into the final lap, Bentley showed why he was the British champion as he produced a massive impact and quickly passed Riley, Dyna and Keith as he opened up an insurmountable lead in seconds , as if he had barely touched his reserves until this point.

The gap continued to widen as Bentley crossed the finish line for victory, pointing to the #ForGeorge sign on his three-piece suit as he took the tape away.

Behind him, Keith finished second and Reilly took the final podium ahead of Dyna, leading Team GB 1-3.
