Bin Tamim: “reaching more readers”
ASecond publication point of view Readers who know will remember our coverage of the United Arab Emirates in May, Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center (ALC) is the production umbrella agency under the Emirate’s Department of Culture and Tourism for Abu Dhabi International Book Fair and many other events.
In a new announcement, the ALC announced that all book fair participants in the emirate of Abu Dhabi will be exempt from exhibition and participation fees in 2023 – great news for booksellers, publishers and other exhibitors.
In fact, this is the third year in which the emirate’s government has expressed its strong support for the reading culture it has fostered and for the publishers who depend on these fairs for their considerable income.
For example, the subsidy includes the Al Ain Book Festival 2023 and the Al Ain Book Festival 2023, in addition to the recently concluded Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2023.
The goal, as conveyed by the press, is to “provide a strong impetus to attract more publishers and creators to these exhibitions, which helps to enrich the local and regional cultural scene; to provide Arabic libraries with a large number of international publications; and position Abu Dhabi as a global cultural capital, a thriving business center and a center for intercultural dialogue.”
In a prepared statement, the chairman of the Arabic Language Center, Dr AS Alibin Tamim– who is also the secretary general Sheikh Zayed Book Prize— was quoted as saying, “The fee waiver for presses, exhibitors and publishers attending the Abu Dhabi Book Fair and Festival – now in its third consecutive year – is a catalyst for growth and progress in the local publishing and creative industries, in the region and globally.
“This is in line with ALC’s broader goals of reaching a wider audience and promoting and enhancing Arabic content across all forms of publication.
“This decision reflects the vision of our wise leadership and the enormous value they place on knowledge and culture as fundamental elements of a thriving society.”
This year’s Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, the 32nd edition of the fair, closed on May 28.
Of course, one of the highest profile programs at the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center is Sheikh Zayed Book PrizeIn its 18th iteration, it has just added a 10th category to its awards slate and is open for submissions.
