During the Covid-19 lockdown, the world has witnessed a growing interest in all kinds of hobbies, from baking bread to Marble Racing and play with model trains.
With that comes an increase in enrolment in craft courses, including pottery and ceramics.
That’s where Khazaf Art Studio Abu Dhabi comes in. Run by Sarah Al Hosani, Mushrif’s business opened in October 2021, offering ceramics studios and making for students aged 5+.
Three types of workshops are offered: pottery crafting; potter’s wheel throwing; and ceramic glass.
“We also have studios for private and party groups, or if there is an artist who wants to use the space for their own studio as well,” Al Hosani told National.
“Basically, the idea is to bring the art world together.”
Al Hosani said her mission is to encourage a greater appreciation of handicrafts and arts.
“I hope this workshop will be useful to anyone interested in learning pottery, or even someone who wants to spend some time creating things with their hands or glazing some objects and decorating them.”
She wants people to appreciate the effort put into each piece.
“It’s not always easy and simple, it’s not done all at once, and it takes some time to prepare, so I hope they appreciate and enjoy the process, which makes the artwork even more valuable.”
Al Hosani’s plan for the rest of the summer is to hold workshops in various locations, such as libraries around Abu Dhabi, and then in other emirates later this year. “I plan to attend different events and festivals,” she said.
She is often approached by other businesses such as coffee shops, restaurants and florists to make ceramics for their venues.
“So we make ceramics according to their requirements and the theme and concept that suits them.”
She said Al Hosani’s passion for arts and crafts developed at an early age.
“I used to always like to use my hands to create things, especially things that look pretty, but also practical things that we can use.”
She recalled collecting objects from around the house and decorating them, even if it was just putting it in her bedroom where no one could see it.
She went on to study Multimedia Design at Zayed University, majoring in Art and Art History. “So it gave me a deeper understanding of art. I would also say I’m more interested in art education. My love for teaching has allowed me to do that.”
