Abu Dhabi commissions its first research vessel

The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) launched its first research vessel on Friday to advance ongoing oceanographic research efforts in the UAE.


ship name jevon, a term referring to one of the finest and most valuable types of pearls – is the UAE’s first and most advanced marine research vessel. Freire Shipbuilding in Vigo, Spain, built the vessel in partnership with Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding.


The 50-meter boat can accommodate 30 people. It is equipped with six science laboratories for studying samples and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV).


The vessel will operate in UAE territorial waters, including the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.


In addition, EAD will use jevon Completion of ongoing deep sea marine environment and fisheries research. Other environmental initiatives the vessel will support include the UAE’s Marine Fisheries Blue Carbon Assessment Project.

Part of the project’s work plan includes establishing a DNA baseline for the UAE’s major fish species. The data is expected to provide a clear picture of the status and trends of the UAE’s fisheries industry, and ultimately help EAD design and implement sustainable development programmes.
