As the legislator and regulator of Abu Dhabi’s energy sector, responsible for issuing the strategy, overseeing its implementation and ensuring sustainability and climate neutrality goals are met, Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) organizes first workshop update Abu Dhabi Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalization Strategy 2030. Government entities participating in the workshop included the Ministry of Municipalities and Transport, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality, Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity CouncilAbu Dhabi Electricity Distribution Company, Al Ain Electricity Distribution Company and Abu Dhabi Energy Services Company.
The workshop aims to highlight and discuss key developments and achievements of the DOE strategy launched in 2019, which aims to bring significant economic and environmental benefits to Abu Dhabi. These include the security of energy supply and the sustainability of the emirate’s resources, in line with Abu Dhabi’s vision and related national strategies.
Abu Dhabi’s Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalization Strategy (DSM) 2030 is a multi-stakeholder initiative comprising nine programmes.It has the potential to save 22% energy and 32% water, equivalent to AED 8 billion, while avoiding the discharge of more than 9 metric tons of Carbon dioxide emissions – The equivalent of taking 1.5 million cars off the road for an entire year.
Representatives of participating government entities were briefed on the key challenges to strategy implementation and how to address them. Plus, they understand how to leverage their expertise to keep pace with strategy development.

He added: “Our strategy establishes an implementation framework that includes a series of plans, initiatives and enablers to help entities, companies and individuals rationalize water and electricity consumption and take effective measures to increase consumption efficiency. Updating the strategy will help to develop programs and initiatives to achieve their goals through the cooperation of various stakeholders to enhance sustainability and protect the resources of the emirate, making the best use of them.”

Since the strategy’s launch in 2019, it has achieved several milestones, including reducing its 2030 water-saving target by about 50 percent and reducing its electricity-saving goal by about 31 percent for the same year.This equates to a reduction of 3 million tons of CO2 emissions, and the introduction of policies and regulations that have the potential to achieve these goals, such as energy efficiency policies for government buildings and Abu Dhabi Measurement and Verification Protocol.
