Having a culturally influential family, being a good role model for your children and protecting them from the negative influence of social media are some of the ways senior officials have listed as appropriate ways to raise children at the opening of a parents conference in Abu Dhabi .

Sara Awad Issa Al-Musallam, Minister of State for Early Childhood Education, Chairman of the Federal Early Childhood Authority and Chair of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge, delivered a keynote speech at “Parenting: Not a Conference” which began on Wednesday afternoon (Adek ) said that the dynamics of parenting are constantly changing, and parents must adapt to these changes.

“The challenges of parenting vary by family, place and culture, but the main issues behind them are very similar. The needs of the child should be at the center,” she said.

The unprecedented event, which will take place at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island until 4 November, promises to inform, inspire and even challenge perceptions of parenting.

The opening ceremony of the meeting was attended by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office.

Neo-Jane Masisi, First Lady of Botswana, said in her speech that in addition to one’s occupation, parenting is the most important occupation.

“Parents, biological parents or other parents: If what we do in this world is not for our children or their children, then what are our main drivers in this world?” she asked.

“Raising children over time presents many challenges. What worked for us parents may not necessarily work now.”

Masisi added: “A strong family can only be achieved through proper parenting. Parents must be responsible and appropriate behavior and discipline should be passed on to their children. When children see their parents in an intelligent and interactive way When interacting with other cultures, they also want to be involved.”

How to Raise Your Child to Become a Global Citizen While Maintaining a Local Identity

In a panel on how parents can raise their children as global citizens, moderated by CNN anchor Becky Anderson, Musallam said that in order to help children develop a global mindset, it helps to experience a variety of things first-hand at home culture.

“Amplify our internal culture by practicing them at home, [we] can help pass them on to our children,” Musallam said.

“By developing global mindsets and global competencies from an early age, children will be equipped with the skills they need to do well in school and thrive as global citizens who embrace diversity in all aspects of their lives.”

The minister added that it was also important for children to have discussions with those they interact with in their communities and around the world.

“Returning to community and cultural norms in our education system helps transform our children into responsible [people],” she says.

For Botswana’s First Lady, Masisi, children spend a lot of time on social media and, in addition to being at risk of online abuse, harassment and extortion, have also discovered different things like violence and other bad behavior.

“It is therefore the responsibility of parents to protect their children from the negative effects of social media. We should lead our children to be [best they can be]and forget about behaviors and things that don’t benefit them,” she noted.

Another international expert said that participating in cultural events would not only help strengthen the bond between parents and children, but would also support their development as global citizens.

She pointed out that for children to develop their own independent drive and continue to seek new experiences in the future, it is crucial that they understand and enjoy experiencing new things and develop into true global citizens.

The campaign aims to foster a global conversation to better help parents face new major challenges in a world where traditional road signs are gone and previous rulebooks no longer apply.

Offering a rich programme covering all stages of parenting – from early childhood to adolescence and adolescence – across 5 themes (Identity, New Perspectives, Development, Wellbeing and Early Childhood), visitors will have access to new and reimagined learning opportunities, can help them become better individuals, spouses and carers.
