Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The Abu Dhabi Neonatal and Pediatric ECMO Symposium 2022 was jointly organized by Abu Dhabi Health Services (SEHA), the UAE’s largest healthcare network, and the Department of Health (DoH) on 3-5 December Held at the Marriott Hotel Downtown Abu Dhabi.
This comprehensive three-day neonatal and pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) seminar is designed to provide an enriching learning experience for neonatal and pediatric nursing specialists.
ECMO is a technique that uses a pump to circulate blood through artificial lungs and back into the blood. The system provides cardiopulmonary bypass support outside the infant and is used to support children awaiting heart or lung transplants. The use of ECMO to provide respiratory and cardiac support has increased in recent years.
Attendees are taught by a multidisciplinary faculty consisting of experts from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) registry. Internationally renowned guest speakers from the UK and Saudi Arabia assist local experts in delivering state-of-the-art training during the workshop.

The workshop aims to lay the groundwork for a service that the UAE can be proud of. Dr Saleh Fares, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi ECMO Working Group, Ministry of Health. The Executive Director of the Center for Emergency Preparedness and Response said: “With the development of ECMO capacity in Abu Dhabi, we will be able to save lives previously lost to respiratory or circulatory failure. We are ensuring that Abu Dhabi’s healthcare system is fully equipped to Taking care of our children.This includes regular training of our ECMO first responders in specialized centers and making Abu Dhabi a regional center of excellence in healthcare in advanced medical fields.
Attendees provided accredited training.A combination of taught lectures on various aspects of ECMO [including venovenous (VV), venoarterial (VA) and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR)] Hands-on sessions on intubation, circuit assemblies/devices, routine alarm management, emergency troubleshooting scenarios, ECMO prone positioning, and safe transfer of ECMO patients are part of an extensive workshop agenda. The organizing committee is also working hard to identify a potential opportunity to observe patients currently on ECMO.
