As children use the Internet more and spend more time online for a variety of activities, they are at increasing risk of encountering online criminals, including cyberbullying.
According to the Abu Dhabi Digital Authority, cyberbullying can occur through social media, messaging apps, gaming platforms and other online channels. Experts have warned that the more time kids spend online, the greater the chances of online predators targeting them.
Abu Dhabi Police said children may face various dangers online, including cyberbullying, cyber predators, extortion, posting private information, accessing inappropriate content and phishing.
In the fight against cyberbullying, the UAE Ministry of Education (MoE) has launched a new campaign in 2021, in which they urge students to interact and behave positively with others online and to report any form of bullying.
Abu Dhabi Digital Authority said it encouraged residents to create a better and safer internet for everyone, especially children.
If your child is being bullied online, follow these tips:
- keep calm and don’t panic
- Don’t make sudden decisions like taking away a child’s device
- Empower your kids and show confidence in them
- focus on gathering evidence
- Stop and report cyberbullying to the appropriate authorities.
Here are some tips for protecting your children on the Internet:
- Communicate openly with children so they can tell trusted adults about inappropriate online connections
- Update devices with the latest software and antivirus software, monitor privacy settings, override webcams, use parental controls and safe search.
- Spend time helping children identify and avoid misinformation and inappropriate content
- Encourage healthy online habits, such as kindness and respect for others, and how to deal with cyberbullying and inappropriate content
- Report Suspicious Online Activity with Aman
Authorities also urged parents and children to report any suspicious online activity through “Aman”. Officials said the Aman service is one of the most important initiatives of the Abu Dhabi Police, which receives information on cybercrime and other information from the public 24/7 and in complete confidentiality.
