The event marks its fiftieth anniversary and is named in honor of the late Malayalam performance legend Murali
With the return of the annual Bharath Murali Theater Festival after a two-year hiatus, residents of Abu Dhabi will be able to watch eight plays written in Malayalam by talented theater artists.
The plays will be staged at the Kerala Social Center in Abu Dhabi from Saturday until January 30. The inauguration took place on Friday night.
The shortlisted performance teams come from all the emirates of the United Arab Emirates. The first performance was performed by a team from the Indian Social Center in Ajman.
The festival is named in honor of the late multi-talented Malayalam actor Murali and is KSC’s signature event, said Krishnakumar, its president vice-president.
“This is the 11th edition of the annual Bharath Murali Theater Festival, a major calendar event that attracts interest from theater artists and community members who participate with great enthusiasm. This year’s event is special, Because we are also commemorating our 50th anniversary,” he said.
Secretary-General Shereen Vijayan noted that the judges for the competition were from Kerala.
“The plays are directed by top directors. There will be a jury of two from Kerala.”
Arts secretary Nisham Velluthadathil said the selection process began in October.
“We have checked the entire script and obtained the necessary approvals from local authorities before holding the festival. Each competition will last 1 to 2 hours.”
VS Thampi, Assistant Vice President of Lulu International Exchange, said the festival is one of the most sought after by theater lovers in the UAE.
Sooraj Prabhakar, Senior Operations Manager, Ahalia Medical Group, said: “This is an opportunity for all art lovers to witness some unforgettable performances.”
Both Lulu International Exchange and Ahalia Medical Group are supporting the festival.
There will be awards in different categories such as Best Screenplay, Director, Screenplay, Actor, Actress, Child Actor, Costume, Music, etc., and will be announced on January 31.
The play will run on Saturdays and Sundays January 20, 21, 26, 28, 29 and 30. With seating for 700 people, the first bell of the show will be rung at 8.15pm.
