Greece will hold general elections in the first half of the year, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Saturday, rejecting opposition pressure to call early elections amid a wiretapping scandal.

Government sources had earlier said the election, originally scheduled for June, would take place anytime after April.

“The election will be in the spring, by which time we’ve effectively used up our four-year term,” Mitsotakis said.

Opposition parties have called for the prime minister’s resignation and are seeking early polls over alleged spying scandals targeting politicians, journalists and business leaders.

Media reports said illegal spyware known as Predator was involved along with legitimate means authorized by prosecutors.

Due to the electoral system of proportional representation, experts say no party can secure an absolute majority in the first round of the next election.

Recent opinion polls show the ruling NDP leading the main opposition Syriza by about 8 percentage points.
