Global statistics database Numbeo has published its 2023 survey results to Quality of life around the world.
The survey determined an overall value for ‘quality of life’ based on a number of qualifying factors, aspects of life that contribute to the overall feeling of ‘you know what, this place is actually pretty good’.
Quality of life indicators include cost of living, healthcare, climate, traffic, pollution and safety. Crime, and of course the “perceived safety” to contend with, is a huge factor in determining your likelihood of enjoying a life experience in a particular location. If you’re constantly saying to yourself “Oh, it’s a bit of a murder today,” your city may be underestimating the dual cause of poor safety scores, and if you’re constantly forgetting to guard the gate with no negative consequences, it may lead you to guess you’re living in A nice neighborhood.
if you look Extracted Crime/Security Numbeo Index Survey, Abu Dhabi topped the list (for the sixth consecutive year). That’s one of 416 cities, but it’s still not surprising.

Three other UAE cities are also among the top 10 safest cities in the world due to consistently low crime rates. Ajman ranked fourth, Sharjah fifth and Dubai seventh.
The UAE ranks second in the national league (out of 84 countries) as the safest country in the country, with Qatar trailing by 0.3 points.
At the other end of the scale, you’ll find Durban, South Africa; Pretoria, South Africa; and Caracas, with Venezuela in the bottom three and Caracas sitting at the bottom.
How are these numbers calculated?
The following questions were posed to survey respondents and asked to rate their responses on a scale from “good” to “well, maybe not so good.”
- How serious do you think the level of crime is?
- Change in crime levels over the past three years
- Safe walking during the day
- Safe walking at night
- how worried are you about being mugged or robbed
- Worried about your car being stolen (or what’s in it)
- Fear of being physically attacked by strangers
- Fear of being insulted or harassed by anyone in the street or any other public place
- Fear of being physically attacked because of the color of your skin, race, gender or religion
- Problems with people using and dealing in drugs
- How big of a problem is property crime?
- How serious is violent crime?

In terms of overall quality of life, the biggest winners were the cities of the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and the Scandinavian and Australasian countries, with The Hague (Netherlands) earning City MVP status.
Abu Dhabi ranks 24th overall (out of 242), but is the highest ranked in the region.
Internationally, the UAE ranks 15th (out of 84 countries).
Sadly, Manila in the Philippines scored lowest on the quality of life indicator, after Lagos in Nigeria and Beirut in Lebanon.
More stats on the expat community in the UAE – the highest ranked cities in Pakistan are Islamabad at 133rd; London at 153rd (though Edinburgh, at 13th, is the UK’s highest quality of life score); There are several cities in the top 20, with Jacksonville, Florida (15th) topping the list (Detroit is the lowest at 141st); Mangalore is India’s best performer (138th), but Mumbai is No. 233. Paris, France is also in the bottom half (172).
How reliable is this information?
This type of survey-based research is indeed considered one of the best ways to compare country-to-country or international city-to-international cities, as the data collection bias collected is relatively low.
It’s worth noting that Numbeo says the data used is up to 36 months old.
