Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi’s Social Contribution Authority – Ma’an has opened a dedicated gym for people of determination (PoD) in Port Zayed.
The new facility, Desert Shield Fitness Gym, was inaugurated in the presence of Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Zayed High Organization (ZHO).
The gym is fully equipped to promote diverse and inclusive physical activity, as well as an active community activity programme, the first of its kind in the UAE and will provide an ideal place for determined individuals to develop their athletic, social and interpersonal skills.
The opening ceremony also witnessed Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development (DCD), Abdulla Alhumaidan, Secretary General of ZHO, Hamad Ali Al Dhaheri, Deputy Minister of DCD, and Salama AlAmeemi, Director General of Ma’.
Gyms are established in partnership between the public, private and third sectors. And showcased the creativity and social enterprises nurtured by the first batch of PoD-focused Saddle Social Incubators (MSI). Maan supports the project through its grant program, and it is recognized through the Maan Society Certificate.
Desert Shield is designed to enhance the lives of PoDs, enhance their well-being and integrate into mainstream society.
“With the empowerment of the PoD becoming a top priority for DCD, the launch of Desert Shield Gym demonstrates our determination to advance social enterprise and accelerate innovation to address societal challenges. Through material support from the community, social work in nonprofits and the private sector Convergence of corporate social responsibility, we seek to better meet the needs of any significant part of the community, while fulfilling our broader vision of building a collaborative community,” said Al Ameemi.
“At Ma’an, we will continue to prioritize creative entrepreneurship and business-focused solutions that support Abu Dhabi’s social priorities and make a real difference in the lives of its people,” she added.
Dr. Layla Alhyas, Executive Director of Community Development at DCD, praised Ma’an’s tireless efforts to launch a well-equipped, inclusive gym in line with the Abu Dhabi Determined People Strategy. The strategy aims to empower PoDs by providing appropriate services and resources and ensure their participation in various fields.
Alhyas said services provided by sports facilities should be available to all segments of society, including PoD. Providing tailored services gives individuals the opportunity to participate more in society and ensure their well-being.
DCD is keen to work with partners to increase the level of inclusivity in Abu Dhabi, which in turn will make Abu Dhabi a city that encourages and supports PoD.
MSI is a vibrant emerging hub for social impact projects in Abu Dhabi, encouraging imaginative solutions to social, cultural and environmental challenges. Through semi-annual recruitment of new cohorts, the incubator provides up to 12 successful applicants with resources and support in the form of investment, learning and development, mentoring and networking opportunities to help them innovate, grow and prosper.
