Abu Dhabi public art kicks off with unveiling of WAVE

Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi’s new initiative is part of its ongoing commitment to commission public art for the emirate

Three long-term elements include Abu Dhabi Biennale of Public Art, Manar Abu Dhabi and direct artist commissions

The initiative will enhance the creative heritage, cultural infrastructure, liveability and wellbeing of residents of the UAE capital through placemaking and collective memory

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, March 21, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced the launch of Abu Dhabi Public Arta wide-reaching initiative that will further the emirate’s long tradition of investing in a culture and integrating it into the social fabric.

The initiative was launched on March 20th with the unveiling of WAVE, a public digital media artwork, by art collective d’strict at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation. Using anamorphic illusion technology, the 2D installation recreates the ever-surging three-dimensional waves, and was exhibited for the first time at COEX K-Pop Plaza in Seoul, South Korea.

Public Art Abu Dhabi’s projects will reflect the emirate’s inherent cultural identity, cementing a sense of belonging and fostering creativity. Integral to the program is its community engagement work. As a catalyst for creativity and artistic expression in the public sphere, Abu Dhabi Public Art will offer everyone the opportunity to participate in new cultural programming.

More than $35 million will be invested in the program each year to support the emirate’s wider creative industries through public art.

The Abu Dhabi Public Art Center will work to preserve important architectural and urban spaces and enhance their historical, aesthetic, social, scientific and technological value to the community. It will expand the ambitions of DCT Abu Dhabi’s Modern Heritage Conservation Initiative (MHCI), which identifies, protects and maintains sites that tell the story of the country’s recent history.

Abu Dhabi Biennial of Public Artwill open in November 2024, with Rim FadaDirector of Cultural Foundation and Abu Dhabi Cultural Programs, Independent Curator angry eilat. The two curators co-curated the multifaceted award-winning project “Liminal Spaces” in Palestine, Israel and Germany between 2006 and 2009. Fadda and Eilat will bring to the inaugural Abu Dhabi Biennial of Public Art their experience of working on projects involving deep engagement with community and art in the public realm.

Galit Eilat, Co-curator, Abu Dhabi Biennale of Public Artsaid: “Having worked with Reem in the past, I am delighted and proud to embark on this ambitious new curatorial project together. The Biennale will commission and showcase a vibrant, inclusive and diverse community rooted in the UAE and the region. artists, while also fulfilling its mission of engaging artists from all over the world.”

Other items will include Mannar Hotel Abu Dhabi, a public art platform featuring light art sculptures and installations in the Abu Dhabi Islands and mangroves. Viewers will embark on an immersive water journey to discover the artwork from a whole new perspective. The exhibition will connect the shores of the different islands and celebrate Abu Dhabi’s natural beauty. Works of art will range from light projections, sculptures and installations to performances, creating a surreal and magical look to the surrounding landscape.

Public Art Abu Dhabi to further make its mark with a series of annual events direct commission Travel through the emirate’s landmarks, including tunnels, roundabouts, bridges, parks, and more. Commissioning artists to create significant permanent or temporary works, the committee will draw inspiration from the distinctive character of the UAE capital and highlight its modern heritage and natural landscape. They will enhance the daily lives of the public and reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading cultural destination with a unique identity.

About Abu Dhabi Public Art Partnership and Community Engagement

The Abu Dhabi Public Art Center will serve as a platform for the emirate’s multicultural community to engage in various projects. Past projects of this magnitude have included the performance show Durub Al Tawaya, as well as initiatives by prominent artists including Hassan Hajjaj, Imran Qureshi and Rimini Protocol. About Reem Fadda and Galit Eilat’s collaboration project “Liminal Spaces”

“Liminal Spaces” is a multifaceted award-winning project co-curated by Reem Fadda and Galit Eilat from 2006 to 2009. Stretching across Palestine, Israel and Germany, it invited artists and cultural practitioners to examine the realities of physical segregation and occupation in cities, and facilitated the production of artworks, residencies, conferences, workshops, publications and more.
