Abu Dhabi signs MoU with Japanese firm for new art space

ABU DHAB – Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), through its subsidiary Japan Oil Development, Co., Ltd., has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japanese oil company INPEX Corporation (INPEX). (JODCO), sponsoring the upcoming teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi for 1 billion yen ($7.646 million).

The experiential art space is based on the “environmental phenomenon” concept of Tokyo-based international art collective teamLab, and was developed by DCT Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Miral, Abu Dhabi’s leading creator of immersive destinations and experiences.

When construction is complete in 2024, visitors and residents will be able to enjoy a unique experience. teamLab Phenomena is located in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, which is home to several important cultural projects including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Berkeley Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Manarat, Zayed German National Museum, Abu Dhabi Guggenheim Museum and Abu Dhabi Natural History Museum.

The MoU was signed by DCT Abu Dhabi Deputy Minister Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani and JODCO President and CEO Hiroshi Fujii. JODCO has agreed to sponsor teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi to contribute to the enrichment of the UAE’s cultural landscape and will seek to implement an official sponsorship agreement following discussions on specific terms.

DCT Abu Dhabi Chairman Mohammad Khalifa Al Mubarak expressed his excitement for the partnership, which he said will inspire a new generation, sparking imagination and ideas for the future.

Saood Al Hosani said the MoU demonstrates the competitiveness and attractiveness of Abu Dhabi as a destination for business partnerships that can add mutual value and enrich lives.

INPEX President and CEO Takayuki Ueda expressed his pleasure in sponsoring teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi and said the partnership is part of their educational, cultural and environmental activities to support the core energy business of their subsidiary JODCO. Ueda further stated that teamLab’s inspiring work cannot be described in words and they look forward to bringing Emirati children and youth to the art space upon completion, helping to nurture and enhance their curiosity, imagination and creativity. INPEX also intends to partner with Abu Dhabi to provide low-carbon energy solutions to Japan and other countries over the next 50 years, while strengthening cooperation between the UAE and Japan through social responsibility programs.

Overall, INPEX’s sponsorship highlights the ongoing collaboration between the UAE and Japan, and the development of teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will offer visitors and residents a unique immersive cultural experience.
