The Challenge of Overcrowded Space

The head of the UAE Space Agency noted that space overcrowding has become a major international challenge. “Growth in the space sector has seen a surge in the number of satellites launched and in orbit. This growth creates new business opportunities but also leads to sustainability challenges on Earth and in space, such as orbital debris,” he added.

With estimated revenues of the global space industry reaching $1 trillion by 2040, the space economy will drive industrial growth and innovation in a range of industries and provide economic opportunities for a growing number of emerging space nations.

A pioneer in the Arab world, the UAE has launched a AED3 billion fund to support pioneering programs in collaboration with international and Emirati companies in engineering, science and research applications in the space sector.

5 research centers, 3 universities

Al Qubaisi revealed that the UAE has established five major space science research centers and three universities to train Emirati cadres to strengthen the UAE’s human capital in the space field.

“Today, the UAE is training students in satellite design and manufacturing; developing its own satellite manufacturing capabilities; promoting and stimulating entrepreneurship in the space sector; and supporting the UAE’s space programs and projects.”

He added that investment in advanced science, knowledge, space industry and future science is in line with the UAE’s interests and aspirations and promotes its participation in the global scientific movement to explore outer space and achieve the goals of the UAE’s 2071 centenary.

The UAE is also keen to strengthen partnerships, collaborations and active local and global investments in the space industry for the benefit of humanity.

accelerated research

In October 2021, the UAE Space Agency announced the launch of a new UAE interplanetary mission, which will include an expedition to the asteroid belt beyond Mars. The mission is scheduled to launch in 2028.

“It aims to further accelerate the young nation’s space engineering, scientific research and exploration capabilities, and to drive innovation and opportunities in the country’s private sector,” he added.
