Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week hosts inaugural Green Hydrogen Summit in UAE Year of Climate Action

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, January 3, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), a global initiative to accelerate sustainable development spearheaded by the UAE and its clean energy powerhouse Masdar, will this year host its first annual Green Hydrogen Summit, highlighting green hydrogen Energy is of growing importance globally as we move towards net zero emissions.

The 2023 Green Hydrogen Summit on January 18 will be one of the key events of ADSW 2023, bringing together heads of state, policymakers, industry leaders, investors, youth and entrepreneurs for a series of high-impact dialogues It will be held in the UAE from 30 November to 12 December ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28). COP28, the UAE climate conference, will see the conclusions of the first global stocktake of the Paris Agreement – assessing the progress made by countries developing national climate plans.

His Excellency Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Special Envoy for Climate Change and Chairman of Masdar, said: “We are at a critical time as countries prepare to gather in the UAE to highlight the progress made in tackling climate change A pathway to net zero. Topics to be covered at ADSW’s inaugural Green Hydrogen Summit include developments in hydrogen production, conversion, transport, storage and use. It will include high-level discussions focusing on the development of the UAE’s hydrogen economy, the role of government and regulation, as well as panel sessions on a wide range of topics including innovation, sustainable finance, green energy in Africa and the hydrogen value chain.

The Green Hydrogen Summit is organized in partnership with the Hydrogen Council, the Atlantic Council, the International Renewable Energy Agency and Dii Desert Energy.

ADSW organizer Masdar announced in December the launch of its new green hydrogen business to support the UAE’s green hydrogen economy. Masdar’s green hydrogen business aims to produce up to 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030. Masdar has been actively involved in several projects related to green hydrogen production, including entering into a joint development agreement with major Egyptian state-backed organizations to build a green hydrogen production plant, with the goal of having an electrolyzer capacity of 4 GW by 2030 and producing green hydrogen annually 480,000 tons.

Founded in 2008, ADSW brings together Heads of State, policy makers, industry leaders, investors, entrepreneurs and youth to discuss, engage and debate climate action and innovation to ensure a sustainable world.

ADSW 2023, the first international sustainability event this year, will once again host the ADSW summit hosted by Masdar. The summit, which takes place on 16 January, will focus on a wide range of key themes including food and water security, energy access, industrial decarbonisation, health and climate adaptation.

As in previous years, ADSW 2023 will feature partner-led events and opportunities for international engagement on sustainability-related topics, including the International Renewable Energy Agency’s IRENA Congress, the Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum, Abu Dhabi Sustained Finance Forum and World Future Energy Summit.

ADSW 2023 will also mark the 15th anniversary of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, the UAE’s groundbreaking global award for sustainability excellence. Masdar’s Youth in Sustainability Platform will host the Y4S Hub this week, aiming to reach 3,000 young people, alongside Masdar’s Women in Sustainability, Environment and Renewable Energy (WiSER) Platform annual forum, Giving women a greater voice in the sustainability debate.
