Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), a global platform for accelerating sustainable development, is hosted by Masdar and today announced a new collaboration that will bring the elements of the week to Expo 2020 Dubai. The opening ceremony of ADSW and the Zayed Sustainability Award ceremony will be held at the Dubai Exhibition Centre on Monday, January 17, 2022.
The announcement was announced during the 2020 World Expo Climate and Biodiversity Week (the first of 10 thematic weeks based on the People and Earth Program), and aims to mobilize the world to take decisive action for the health of our world. Bringing ADSW’s important platform to Expo 2020 will further demonstrate the UAE’s leading role in promoting climate change actions in the country, the region and the world.
ADSW is one of the largest gatherings of its kind, hosting more than 45,000 participants from more than 170 countries/regions each year. This week will return between January 15-19, 2022, and will feature a series of high-level face-to-face and virtual events.
His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, UAE, The Climate Change Special Envoy, Chairman Masdar said: Holding the ADSW opening ceremony and ZSP awards ceremony during the 2020 Dubai Expo will help strengthen the UAE’s commitment to climate action and sustainability, which is a key driver of the UAE’s progressive model of economic growth. The combination of ADSW’s experience as a convener and the global reach of Expo 2020 Dubai will help expand partnerships, drive innovation and open up new economic opportunities. As the UAE has made 50 years of progress, sustainability will remain the cornerstone of future growth plans in accordance with the 50 principles, creating new knowledge, new skills, new industries and new employment opportunities. “
The opening ceremony of ADSW and the Zayed Sustainability Award ceremony will bring together more than 600 distinguished guests from all over the world, including heads of state, government ministers, industry leaders and national ambassadors. At the opening ceremony, His Excellency Dr. Sultan Al Jaber will deliver a keynote speech.

Since 2008, Abu Dhabi has provided a sustainable platform for the global community, which has grown through its initiatives and activities to become a thought leader and catalyst for accelerating global sustainable development.
This week will bring together policy makers, industry experts, technology pioneers and the next generation of sustainable development leaders to participate in dialogue and take action to advance the global sustainable development agenda.
The 2022 plan will include the opening ceremony of ADSW, Zayed Sustainability Award ceremony, ADSW summit, IRENA conference, Abu Dhabi Sustainable Finance Forum, Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum, Sustainable Development, Environment and Renewable Energy (WiSER) Women’s Forum, Youth 4 Sustainable Development Hub and World Future Energy Summit-exhibitions and forums.
The Zayed Sustainability Award was launched by His Royal Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, at the 2008 World Future Energy Summit. His father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al, paid tribute to Nahyan and his sustainable development heritage.
Since the first award ceremony in 2009, more than 352 million people have been directly or indirectly affected by the sustainable development solutions and school projects of the 86 winners of the Zayed Sustainability Award.
The award’s annual fund of 3 million US dollars awards 600,000 US dollars to winners in each category; the global high school category is divided into six world regional winners, and each school can apply for up to 100,000 US dollars in bonuses to start or further expand their projects . The six world regions in the global high school category are the Americas, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe and Central Asia, South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific.
With the exception of the opening ceremony and the Zayed Sustainability Award ceremony, all ADSW events will be held in Abu Dhabi or on a virtual basis.
